In September, several MIC sonographers trained with pediatric cardiologists from the Stollery Children’s Hospital and the Tiny HeartsCan Foundation to expand their knowledge of congenital heart disease (CHD), focusing on fetal cardiac screening techniques and anomaly pattern recognition.

Each year, over 3500 babies across Canada are born with congenital heart disease, which refers to a wide range of problems with the heart that could be structural or electrical, present at birth.

The Tiny HeartsCan Foundation has made it its mission to help more babies with heart defects receive their lifesaving diagnosis before birth.

If CHD is diagnosed before birth, medical teams can plan surgery, which is often scheduled almost immediately after delivery.

During the education sessions at MIC, pediatric cardiologists provided hands-on training for our sonographers as they scanned pregnant volunteers.

The sessions focused on cardiac screening techniques and recognizing anomaly patterns.

If our team detects an anomaly or something suspicious during a patient scan, we can refer the patient to a local hospital for a comprehensive fetal echocardiogram to diagnose CHD.

At MIC, we are proud to empower our staff through continuing education, ensuring we deliver imaging excellence in our clinics and ultimately brighter beginnings for families impacted by CHD.
