What is a Meckel’s scan?
A Meckel’s scan is a nuclear medicine test used to diagnose Meckel’s diverticulum.
What is Meckel’s diverticulum?
A Meckel’s diverticulum is a little pocket in the wall of the small intestine. It develops during fetal growth. This pouch may contain stomach or pancreatic tissue. Acid from the tissue can irritate and damage the intestine.
Meckel’s diverticulum is most often diagnosed in children, but it can also be found when someone is older. It can cause bleeding into the rectum and stool, and pain in the abdomen.
How do I prepare for a Meckel’s scan?

What to Expect During a Meckel’s Scan
- A technologist will take your medical history and explain the procedure.
- The radiotracer will be injected into your arm.
- Images are taken as the radiotracer moves through the small intestine.
- Pictures will be taken every 5 minutes over a 1-hour period.
